This is quite a funny bit... ...but as you can see, there are parts that are a little contrived...

Viewpoint:
"Remember: united we stand, divided we fall."

If ever there was a case of humour being subjective, this is it. For once I’m going to tell you to completely disregard my views, as this is a well-made short that’s loved by pretty much everyone... except for me.

Why this is I can’t quite put my finger on. Possibly it’s that after nearly thirty sound shorts it does feel a little like we’ve seen it all before, and the spark isn’t there. That can’t be right though, as friends tell me they love this one.

I suspect what it really might be is that the film features almost unprecedented levels of violence from Ollie to Stan. While seeing Stan get the better of Ollie is funny, or a third party inflicting the pain, twenty minutes of a virtual two-hander (Billy Gilbert has a miniscule role as a boat seller) with Ollie inflicting violence on the much smaller Stan seems like an exercise in sadism somehow.

Am I taking it all too seriously, especially as Stan’s “black eyes” are obviously fake? Maybe I am. After all, I love Busy Bodies even though that’s similarly lacking in any great subtext or plot development. This one is pretty slow though. Ah, as I said at the beginning – ignore me. Personally, it’s a couple of chuckles and not much else. For 90% of other people, it’s a laugh a minute. Add at least one extra bowler hat star to the total and it’ll all work out for the best...

The funniest part of the movie for me Poor old Stan, he takes a beating in this one
