Split screen Pretty basic, albeit surreal, slapstick

Viewpoint:
"You've forgotten more than he'll ever know!"

Probably up there with stuff like The Chimp as a Laurel and Hardy short you could sit pre-schoolers happily down in front of. When I was five the sight of Stan and Ollie in dresses with dubbed-on voices seemed like the funniest thing in the world to me. Nowadays it seems, if anything, disturbing.

Crossdressing is an old standby, of course, and Stan had been doing it since back in his solo days. There's also the silent That's My Wife, where he becomes Mrs. Hardy, but this one feels more like a soul relative of Brats. Technically, it's very good - the lip-synching is much stronger than in the later Thicker Than Water, and the split screens are stunning for the period. Yet the main difference between this and Brats is that Brats had more energy and imagination beyond its base premise. With Twice Two it's deemed enough to have the leads doubling up in drag and not much else. This laziness extends towards the climax, which deems a cake in someone's face a worthy denouement. There's no attempt to innovate here or push the boundaries of comedy - it's just another off the treadmill short, beefed up by a gimmick. Disappointing.

More split screen... what does it say about Stan and Ollie that they want to marry each other's twins? Just not funny
